When the New York Reset Order goes into effect, energy providers in the state may decide to no longer serve customers. Which means your account may get sold to another ESCO or sent back to the utility.

WHAT IS THE NY PSC RESET ORDER?
On December 12, 2019, the NY Public Service Commission (PSC) moved forward to strengthen protections for residential and small commercial customers (mass-market customers) in the retail energy market by severely restricting how energy companies (ESCOs) can do business in the State. The goal is to protect these customers by remedying unfair business practices that have been used by various retail energy market participants and by adopting limitations on the types of products that may be offered to mass-market customers by energy services companies to ensure that those customers are receiving value from the retail energy market.
In the near future, all ESCOs will be restricted in their offerings, except for one. That one exception is Agway Energy Services. The Commission provided Agway with an exception and the “opportunity to continue to offer its EnergyGuard™ service, due to the specific, credible evidence Agway submitted regarding the energy-related value of this product.1”

HOW WILL THIS ORDER AFFECT ME AND WHY IS IT HAPPENING?
Some ESCOs may decide they will no longer serve mass-market customers in the state of New York, so they will either send those customers back to the utility or sell them to another supplier. Another possibility is that they attempt to take advantage of the green-energy loophole so they can continue to charge exorbitant prices to mass-market customers in the state of New York. According to the EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration), some of the worst offenders charged over $0.17 per kilowatt-hour in 2018 when the average that all suppliers charged was only $0.10 per kilowatt-hour! How do prices get so out of hand? A typical tactic is to lure customers in with low introductory rates and slowly increase them when the introductory period ends. When customers don’t notice, rates climb a little more and little more until it is beyond the average rate. As a result of such actions, the PSC took decisive actions to end the practices of these other ESCOs.
