What will happen to your energy supply when the NY Reset Order goes into effect?

When the NY Reset Order goes into effect, homeowners may find their current energy provider has sold their account to another ESCO or it has been sent back to the utility.

However, for Agway Energy Services customers it will be business as usual.

Continue reading to learn what the NY Reset Order means for homeowners, why Agway was given an exemption, and how to maintain your choice of energy provider.

WHAT IS THE
NY RESET ORDER?

On December 12, 2019, the New York Public Services Commission (PSC) put a plan in place to better protect residential and small commercial customers (known as mass-market customers) from the unfair business practices being used by various retail energy market companies. This plan, known as the NY Reset Order, will severely restrict how the majority of energy companies (ESCOs) can continue to do business in the State once the deadline is imposed, which is currently scheduled for Feb 15, 2021.

WHY IS THE
NY RESET ORDER
HAPPENING?

Unfair business practices, like charging over $O.17 per kilowatt-hour versus the average of only $0.10 per kilowatt-hour for electricity in 2018 or luring customers in with low introductory rates and slowly increasing them when the introductory period is over are perfect examples of why the PSC felt it had to step in to protect customers. (FYI: Agway’s average price in 2018 was about $0.09 per kilowatt-hour and that price INCLUDED EnergyGuard™ protection.)

The NY Reset Order will no longer allow "sign-on bonuses", "special introductory pricing" or other "enticements". Without this tactic to lure homeowners in and lock them into contracts, energy companies will have to compete on price and service. This may cause many providers to leave the state of New York.

One company has been allowed to continue with “business as usual” and that company is Agway Energy Services.

WHY WAS AGWAY GIVEN AN EXEMPTION?

EnergyGuard logo

The NY PSC exempted Agway due to the specific, credible evidence Agway submitted regarding the energy-related value of its EnergyGuard™ repair protection product. Agway was the only ESCO able to demonstrate that its product has ongoing energy-related value to the consumer and provides a bona fide benefit. This was accomplished through an open and transparent submission to the NY PSC regarding Agway’s business model and operational processes.

EnergyGuard™ provides repair protection* on heating and air conditioning systems as well as interior electric lines as an added benefit just for being an Agway customer.
